Text:

Single Variable Calculus (Early Transcendentals), fourth edition, by James Stewart; available in the NYU bookstore. This is the standard book for both Calculus 1 and 2.

Homework:

Homework will be assigned and collected weekly, normally on Tuesdays. It is arguably the most important aspect of the class: in addition to contributing to your final grade, you'll find it's the best possible way to prepare for exams.

Exams/Quizzes:

There will be a 10-15 minute quiz in class about every two weeks, usually on material directly related to the homework. Exams will include two midterms and a final.

Syllabus

Weeks 1-2: Introduction, limits and continuity. Sections 1.1, 1.3, 1.6, 2.2, 2.3, 2.5.
Week 3: Derivatives. Sections 2.8, 2.9.
Weeks 4-5: Basic differentiation rules. Sections 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.5.
Week 6: Implicit differentiation, higher derivatives, logarithmic functions. Sections 3.6, 3.7, 3.8.
Week 7: Linear approximations, Newton's method. Sections 3.11, 4.9.
Week 8: Optimization problems, mean value theorem. Sections 4.1, 4.2.
Week 9: Curve sketching, L'Hospital's rule. Sections 4.3, 2.6, 4.5.
Week 10: More optimization, antiderivatives. Sections 4.7, 4.10.
Week 11: Area, distances and the definite integral. Sections 5.1, 5.2.
Week 12: Fundamental theorem of calculus, computing integrals. Sections 5.3, 5.4.
Week 13: Substitution. Section 5.5.
Week 14: Review.
