Spring 2002

General Information

Instructor:Chris Wendl
Office:720 Warren Weaver Hall (Courant Institute Building)
Phone:212-998-3216
E-mail:wendlc@cims.nyu.edu
Office hours:Monday 2-3pm and Tuesday 12noon-1pm. If you're not available for office hours but need help, feel free to contact me (the easiest way is by e-mail) and make an appointment. You may also stop by my office anytime, but be aware that I'm often not there; it's best to call ahead.
Class meetings:Monday, Wednesday and Friday 12:30-1:45pm in 365 Waverly
Text:Intermediate Algebra: Concepts and Graphs, fourth edition, by Charles P. McKeauge; available in NYU bookstore. Be aware that the fourth edition is quite new, and earlier editions had the chapters ordered somewhat differently -- so if you happen to own an earlier edition, it may not always contain the homework problems that I assign. Talk to me if you're in this situation.
Homework:The homework in this class will not be collected or graded, but it is nevertheless the most essential part of the learning process. Problems will be assigned at each class, pertaining to the material we've covered that day. Try to do them before the next class, and come prepared to ask questions about anything that gave you trouble.
Quizzes:Short preannounced quizzes will be given approximately once a week, usually on Wednesdays, and always on material that relates directly to recent homework. The best possible way to prepare for these will be to do all the homework, and ask me for help with anything that confuses you.
Grading:The grading system in this class will not be very strict, but a rough outline is as follows:
Class participation (15%)
Quizzes (35%)
Two Midterms (15% each)
Final Exam (20%)
Web page:See http://www.math.nyu.edu/~wendlc/maththink for periodically updated announcements about the class, as well as a copy of this information.

Tentative Syllabus

The following is a rough guide to what we will be covering and when. It is not set in stone. Topics from chapters 8 and 9 may also be covered if time permits.
